Vitamin A deficiency aggravates iron deficiency by upregulating the expression of iron regulatory protein-2
2012, NutritionCitation Excerpt :Preschool children, pregnant women, and women of child-bearing age constitute the high-risk groups for the two nutrient deficiencies. As early as the 1920s, vitamin A deficiency and anemia or other indices of low iron status were reported to be associated in humans and animals [1–3]. In observational studies, serum retinol has been shown to be positively associated with hemoglobin, hematocrit, and serum iron [4–9].
