2013, Personality and Individual DifferencesCitation Excerpt :In the past 40 years, there have been vast improvements in the survival of those born at extremely low birth weight (ELBW; <1000 g) and at very low birth weight (VLBW; <1500 g) (Doyle, 2006). Although the first generation of ELBW survivors are now well into adulthood, a proportion of these individuals have struggled with problems ranging from cognitive impairments to emotional and behavioral problems, and poorer general health relative to normal birth weight (NBW) controls (Allin et al., 2006; Boyle et al., 2011; Hack et al., 2005; Levy-Shiff et al., 1994; Raikkonen et al., 2008; Saigal, Szatmari, Rosenbaum, Campbell, & King, 1990; Saigal et al., 1994). Research focusing on personality and emotional and behavioral problems in those born at ELBW is relatively scarce, as most studies have focused on the development of chronic psychiatric syndromes in those born at VLBW (e.g., Allin et al., 2006; Hack et al., 2005).
