Sonographic diagnosis of portal venous gas in necrotizing enterocolitis
2022, Pediatrics and NeonatologyCitation Excerpt :Detection of portal venous gas is pathognomonic of NEC with high specificity (86%–98%).2 Sonographic identification of portal venous gas may be a valuable early indicator before a significant roentgenogram changes occurrence.3 Familiarity with characteristic sonographic findings contribute to the early diagnosis of NEC and therefore prompt treatment initiation.
Prognostic value of abdominal sonography in necrotizing enterocolitis of premature infants born before 33 weeks gestational age
2014, Journal of Pediatric SurgeryCitation Excerpt :In 2005, Epelman et al. published a review on ultrasonographic signs observed in NEC cases [22], underlining the advantages of abdominal sonography over plain abdominal radiography, with the latter still considered as the imaging “gold standard” [2]. In addition to facilitating early detection of NEC signs, ultrasound is instrumental in the discovery of peritoneal fluid or free air [21,26], as well as in the assessment of intestinal wall thickness and perfusion [14–20,27,28]. Sonographic data were also found to be more accurate, providing information on peritoneal fluid characteristics, as well as location and extent of necrosis [21,26].

2006, LancetCitation Excerpt :Subsequent films (demonstrating either movement of stool or a fixed pattern of bubbly pneumatosis) and prone films can help in distinguishing between intramural gas and stool.94,137 Portal venous gas appears as linear, branching lucencies overlying the liver, and can be detected on cross-table lateral films and on ultrasound.138–140 Clinicians can also use serial films to follow disease progression and guide clinical management, especially if the infant fails to respond to treatment or deteriorates.
