Dry or hot gases diminish cilia activity, increase mucus viscosity, and may lead to tracheal erosion and necrosis or tracheal tube occlusion [25–28]. Lung function may deteriorate, and ventilator-induced lung injury such as pneumothorax or prolonged oxygen requirement may occur [29].
