2022, NutritionCitation Excerpt :The SCAMP trial considered NDV assessed by Bayley scale III at 2 to 3.5 y, and showed that there was no significant difference in NDV outcomes between neonates fed high-caloric PN and those who received lower energy intakes during the first weeks of life [18]. In the RCT by Lucas et al., neonates fed a preterm formula (80 kcal/dL) or breast milk plus preterm formula (higher caloric intake) had better performance in motor and psychomotor development indices at 18 mo, as evaluated by Bayley scale, of infant development compared with neonates fed a term formula (67.8 kcal/dL) or breast milk plus term formula [19]. Of the 15 cohort studies, nine studies considered an NDV assessment by Bayley scale (II or III) performed at 18 to 24 mo [6,12,20–26].

2021, International Journal of Pediatrics and Adolescent MedicineCitation Excerpt :It reduces the risks of necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) associated with feeding infants with formula, sepsis and mortality [1]. Preterm infants who have received breastmilk have improved long-term growth, neurological and cognitive development [2–4]. Due to reduction of NEC, the American Academy of Pediatrics also recommends human donor milk instead of artificial milk for preterm born infants [1].
