Abstract

A newborn with a patent omphalomesenteric duct is described in this report. This anomaly is a very rare one. Regression of the omphalomesenteric duct occurs as a normal embryonic event in the intrauterine life between the fifth and ninth week of gestation; however, in this case regression occured spontaneously in the neonatal period and resulted in a Meckel's diverticulum with no connection with the umbilicus. This is the first case to be reported.

Unusual discovery of omphalomesenteric fistula. A case report

La fistule omphalo-mésentérique (FOM) est une persistance complète du canal omphalo-mésentérique faisant communiquer l’ombilic avec l’intestin. La présence d’écoulement de liquide intestinal fait évoquer le diagnostic dans sa forme typique. Nous rapportons un cas de FOM chez un enfant de 3 ans découverte à l’occasion de l’ expulsion d’ascaris à travers l’ombilic. Aucun examen complémentaire n’est utile dans ce cas et le traitement consiste en une résection segmentaire transombilicale suivie d’une reconstitution de l’ombilic.
Omphalomesenteric fistula is a complete persistence of the omphalomesenteric duct communicating between the umbilicus and the intestine. The presence of intestinal contents suggests the diagnosis in its typical form. We report a case of omphalomesenteric fistula in a 3-year-old boy to show that intestinal parasitic infection associated with ascariasis expulsion through the umbilicus can be the incidental finding of the omphalomesenteric fistula. This case needs no paraclinical investigation and treatment consists in partial transumbilical resection followed by umbilicus restitution.
