2009, Brain ResearchCitation Excerpt :Paradoxically, it has also been reported that restricting the amount of food eaten by rodents before weaning can shorten their life span (Sayer and Cooper, 1997, 2002). Undernutrition, which is a form of diet restriction, during the gestation and suckling periods is also known to cause a number of deficits and distortions of body and brain growth and structure (Brown and Guthrie, 1968; Guthrie and Brown, 1968; Lynch et al., 1975; Bedi et al., 1980; Smart and Bedi, 1982; Warren and Bedi, 1988; Bedi, 1991; Hoet et al., 2000; Sohlstrom et al., 2000; Alippi et al., 2002; Houdijk et al., 2003; Engelbregt et al., 2004). These findings have led to the hypothesis that the timing of the period of undernutrition in rodents, with respect to weaning, can either accelerate or slow the aging process.
