Some studies have shown that cord plasma contains significantly lower levels of antioxidant vitamins and soluble factors than maternal plasma [34–36], which may be due to lower amount of lipids present in the cord blood that limit the ability to transport such factors [34]. In the present study, although cord blood and maternal GSSG and GSH concentrations were similar in both groups, the enzyme GPx showed lower activity in cord rather than mothers' erythrocytes.

Accordingly, the measurement of vitamin levels in RBC seems to be a more appropriate indicator of the vitamin E status of the infant as it represents the site of action of the molecule (Kelly et al., 1990).
