The mother presented in labour without signs of primary syphilis infection but had positive FTA-abs (fluorescent treponemal antibody absorption test) suggestive of latent syphilis. She received a single dose of penicillin prior to birth.Mother was reactive to T-pallidum particle agglutination, FTA-abs IgM and chemiluminescence immunoassay with a rapid plasma reagin (RPR) of over 128.
