HGF is a cytokine, which is secreted at cell damage and appears to have an importance for the regeneration of certain organs and for the healing of wounds (Neuss et al., 2004). HGF was originally measured in a study of hepatectomized rats and acts as a potent mitogen for hepatocytes (Boros and Miller, 1995). CSF-1 on the other hand, is one of several proteins which are capable of stimulating colony formation by bone marrow cells.
