VZV vasculopathy develops due to vascular invasion when the virus spreads transaxonally from the ganglia to the vessel wall [2,6,7,13]. After reaching the adventitia, the virus spreads transmurally infecting all the layers of the vessel, with disruption of the internal elastic lamina, intimal thickening and decreased smooth muscle cells in media, resulting in a granulomatous arteritis [13].
