When to Perform Lumbar Puncture in Infants at Risk for Meningitis in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit
2018, Infectious Disease and Pharmacology: Neonatology Questions and ControversiesBacterial meningitis in infants
2015, Clinics in PerinatologyCitation Excerpt :Because the LP is an invasive procedure with risks, it is difficult to determine which infant should receive one as part of the septic work-up.40,41 Among infants with positive blood cultures, up to 30% have a concurrent positive CSF culture.42 However, in infants with confirmed meningitis, 15% to 38% have a negative blood culture.27,43–45
Lumbar Puncture in the Neonate: Challenges in Decision Making and Interpretation
2012, Seminars in PerinatologyCitation Excerpt :Several observational studies have examined the incidence of meningitis among neonates evaluated for early-onset sepsis. Visser and Hall5 showed that bacterial meningitis was present in 30% of neonates with culture-proven early-onset sepsis and further demonstrated that 15% of cases of meningitis occurred in the absence of positive blood cultures. In a large retrospective study of >160,000 neonates born at U.S. army hospitals from 1988 to 1992, Wiswell and colleagues6 determined that the incidence of bacterial meningitis was 0.25 per 1000 live births.
