The authors noted the limitations of their data, which relied on maternal recall of drugs used and did not take into account dosage or the use of combination products. No specific pattern of birth defects has been identified, however, raising the question as to whether there are confounding variables that were not controlled in those studies.17,18 Neonatal abstinence syndrome (NAS) is a well-described sequelae of neonates exposed to opioids in utero.

  • Smoking, alcohol consumption and illicit drug use in an Italian population of pregnant women

2011, European Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology and Reproductive Biology
    Citation Excerpt :

Heroin use appears to be associated with an increased incidence of other pregnancy complications including premature delivery, premature rupture of the membranes, intrauterine fetal growth retardation, meconium stained amniotic fluid and perinatal mortality. Moreover, heroin and other opioid drugs, including methadone substitution, are associated with neonatal withdrawal [21–26]. Many women are worried for drug, infection or radiation exposure during pregnancy, and often contact Teratology Information Services (TIS) to have a counseling.
