ESPGHAN/ESPEN/ESPR/CSPEN guidelines on pediatric parenteral nutrition: Organisational aspects
2018, Clinical NutritionCitation Excerpt :Those with primary gut disease need reintroduction of enteral feed tailored according to the underlying disorder. Appropriate minimal enteral feed should be given whenever possible to maintain gut mucosal structure [72] (LoE 3), encourage adaptation [73–76] (LoE 4) and reduce the risk of PN-associated liver disease [54,77] (LoE 3). In the newborn infant with short bowel, expressed breast milk is thought to optimise adaptation [78,79].

2009, Clinics in PerinatologyCitation Excerpt :After massive small bowel resection, only limited adaptation can occur in the absence of enteral nutrition.24 In protracted diarrhea of infancy, the combination of PN and enteral nutrition is superior to PN alone in stimulating intestinal regeneration of disaccharidases.25 The same is considered to be true of intestinal adaptation in SBS.
