Polycythemia in the newborn
2012, Anales de Pediatria ContinuadaWidespread use of fresh frozen plasma in US Children's Hospitals despite limited evidence demonstrating a beneficial effect
2012, Journal of PediatricsCitation Excerpt :Although the use of FFP is relatively frequent, especially in neonates, critically ill children, and those with cardiac disease, evidence demonstrating a benefit is lacking for most scenarios. Numerous clinical indications have been proposed for FFP including volume expansion, blood reconstitution, liver disease, massive hemorrhage, disseminated intravascular coagulation, warfarin toxicity, thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura, single factor replacement, and correction of abnormal clotting tests, among others.6-27 Of all the proposed scenarios, the only one with published evidence supporting its use in children is in blood reconstitution with packed red blood cells (PRBCs) for use in a CPB pump.26
