It has been suggested that embryotoxicity of areca nuts in mice may result from a delay in skeletal maturity (Sinha and Rao, 1985a). Animal studies indicate that impaired muscle development also contributes heavily to low birth weight (Fahey et al., 2005; Rehfeldt and Kuhn, 2006).

2011, Food and Chemical ToxicologyCitation Excerpt :In conclusion, our preliminary results suggest that inhibition of blastocyst growth by arecoline may be responsible for the reduced pregnancy associated with arecoline ingestion. Sinha and Rao have determined that aqueous extracts of ripe betel nuts of unprocessed and processed varieties were administered to pregnant Swiss albino mice at different dose levels and showed to be fetotoxic (Sinha and Rao, 1985a). These studies resulted in increased resorption, dead fetuses and an adversely affected fetal weight.

2011, Environmental Toxicology and PharmacologyCitation Excerpt :Since AEBN is a general carcinogen capable of affecting various tissues, it is likely that exposure of P generation parental mice caused alterations in the Brca1 and Brca2 proteins of their germ cells. The previously reported genotoxic potential of arecoline in mouse germ cells (Sinha and Rao, 1985a,b) supports this contention. Thus, AEBN induced decline in Brca1 and Brca2 protiens would have been initiated in P generation during the 6 weeks of exposure prior to mating (Wary and Sharan, 1988; Choudhury and Sharan, 2009).
