Preterm infants born SGA demonstrated delayed cognitive development into the preschool [5,6] and early school years [7], especially if SGA birth was followed by postnatal failure to thrive [8]. Across the group of preterm infants, early postnatal growth (i.e., during hospitalization) has been associated with neurological and cognitive outcome in infancy and preschool-age [9–12].
