Management of the giant umbilical cord: challenging the need for investigations in the newborn

A 28-week antenatal ultrasound revealed a male fetus with a grossly thickened umbilical cord, normal urinary tract and no other anomalies. Following delivery at 35 weeks, a giant umbilical cord (GUC) was noted, measuring 10 cm×12 cm and weighing an estimated 500 gm (figure 1). An abdominal ultrasound reported air tracking in the urachal remnant and the micturating cystourethrogram was normal. Cord fluid analysis was not suggestive of urine.
