Comparing oxygen targeting in preterm infants between the Masimo and Philips pulse oximeters

Randomised trials demonstrate that different approaches to oxygen saturation targeting in preterm infants significantly affect mortality.1 ,2 The oxygen saturation algorithm used also has an effect, with decreased mortality seen when targeting higher saturations with some algorithms (13.3% vs 21.8%), but not with others (14.8% vs 15.5%).2 This difference may be explained by an artefact within the Masimo SET Radical pulse oximeter which displays a reduced frequency of saturations at 87–90%.3
