It is my hypothesis that all tissues rely on DHEA for optimal function. Low DHEA has been found in preterm infants (Acta Paediatr. 2007 Nov;96(11):1600-5). Protective effects of DHEA against many infectious agents has also been determined. I suggest the findings of Bartels, et al., may be explained by low DHEA. That is, a common cause of low DHEA may be involved in growth retardation in preterm infants and their increased vulnerability to infections. |
